Eric Burdon and War’s Eric Burdon Declares “War” is a 1970 MGM Records LP, catalog SE 4663; the record in this copy is VG+.

After fronting the Animals, Eric Burdon found a different kind of blues expression with War, whose interlocking percussion, organ, harmonica, and bass made the groove a conversation rather than simply a backing track. “Spill the Wine” turns Burdon’s surreal spoken narrative into an unhurried Latin-tinged hit, while the extended “Blues for Memphis Slim” stretches the partnership into looser, exploratory territory. The album captures War before its later run of signature hits, with Burdon acting as both vocalist and storyteller; this VG+ record is an appealing entry point for collectors interested in where psychedelic blues meets the band’s emerging funk vocabulary.
